AND THEN 75% OF YOUTH ARE NOT MEETING PHYSICAL ACTIVITY GUIDELINE RECOMMENDATIONS. SO THERE'S A BIG OPPORTUNITY FOR IMPROVEMENT HERE. AND THAT'S REALLY WHAT OUR WORK IS ABOUT. SO WE DO A LOT OF WORK TO TRY AND SUPPORT SCHOOLS AND THEIR EFFORTS TO PROMOTE ACTIVITY. AND WE DO THIS BY TRYING TO SUPPORT EVIDENCE BASED APPROACHES. THERE'S THREE THAT WE REALLY FOCUS ON THROUGH OUR WORK, AND THREE THAT WE'RE FOCUSING ON THROUGH OUR RESEARCH PROJECT. THE FIRST IS BRAIN BOOSTS OR THOSE BRAIN ENERGIZERS. IT'S GREAT TO SEE THE MEETING START OFF WITH A QUICK ENERGIZER. SO YOU PROBABLY ALL HAVE A SENSE OF WHAT IT IS, BUT IT'S A QUICK BREAK FROM THE LEARNING WHERE YOU CAN GET STUDENTS UP AND ACTIVE, AND THIS CAN HELP PRIME THEM FOR THE NEXT PART OF THEIR LESSON. THE OTHER APPROACH THAT IS EFFECTIVE FOR INCREASING ACTIVITY IS PHYSICALLY ACTIVE LESSONS. SO THIS IS WHERE YOU'RE INTEGRATING MOVEMENT INTO THE ACTUAL LESSON. THE EXAMPLE WE JUST DID HELPS ILLUSTRATE THAT, WHERE I COULD HAVE JUST SHOWN YOU THE SUMMARY SLIDE AND THE FACTS RIGHT FROM THE START, BUT WE INTEGRATED A LITTLE BIT OF MOVEMENT IN IT, HOPEFULLY ENGAGE YOU MORE AND GET SOME BLOOD FLOWING THROUGHOUT THE BODY. SO THESE ARE THE THREE APPROACHES THAT WE'RE TRYING TO SUPPORT AS PART OF OUR RESEARCH EFFORT. AND JUST TO HIGHLIGHT SOME OF THE BENEFITS, I SEE SOME FAMILIAR FACES IN THE ROOM. THE STUDY SUGGESTING IS THAT CHILDREN'S BRAINS ARE MUCH MORE ACTIVE AFTER MOVEMENT. THIS IS ONE OF THE KEY MECHANISMS WHY WE THINK PHYSICAL ACTIVITY CAN REALLY HELP WITH LEARNING IS IT CAN HELP MAKE STUDENTS MORE ALERT AND MORE ATTENTIVE. THE FIGURE ON THE RIGHT. ESSENTIALLY, WHAT THEY FOUND IS THAT AT THE END OF THE PHYSICALLY ACTIVE LESSON, STUDENTS HAD A HIGHER PERCENT, WERE AT A HIGHER PERCENTAGE OF TIME ON TASK, AND IT DROPPED FOR THE SEDENTARY LESSON. SO THIS IS ANOTHER KEY MECHANISM WHY WE THINK PHYSICALLY PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IS REALLY HELPFUL FOR LEARNING, BECAUSE IT CAN HELP STUDENTS ENGAGE MORE IN THE LEARNING CONTENT.BUT YOU KNOW, THESE APPROACHES ARE REALLY HELPFUL, BUT THERE ARE IMPLEMENTATION CHALLENGES.
WE KNOW IT'S NOT ALWAYS EASY FOR TEACHERS OR SCHOOL STAFF TO JUST PICK THESE UP AND START USING THEM. SO THE COMMON BARRIERS THAT WE OFTEN HEAR ABOUT FROM EDUCATORS ARE, AND TEACHERS IN PARTICULAR IS THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY'RE CONCERNED ABOUT STUDENT BEHAVIOR. IF THEY START DOING BRAIN BOOSTS AND OPENING UP THE CLASSROOM TO THE ACTIVITY, IT CAN FEEL EASY TO LOSE CONTROL OF THAT CLASSROOM. SO THAT CAN REALLY DISCOURAGE THE BEHAVIOR. AND THEY'RE CONCERNED THAT IF YOU KNOW, WHETHER IT'S DISTRICT OR SCHOOL LEADERS THAT ARE DOING THE ROUNDS, THEY'RE NOT GOING TO FEEL SUPPORTED IF THEY HAVE THEIR STUDENTS UP AND OUT OF OUT OF THEIR SEATS WHILE THEY'RE LEARNING. THEN WE HELP PROVIDE TRAINING SESSIONS TO TEACHERS WHERE WE EDUCATE THEM ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF BRAIN BOOSTS AND HOW TO MANAGE CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR, HOW TO MANAGE TIME AND SCHEDULES, AND REALLY ADDRESS THOSE KEY BARRIERS. ON THE LEFT IS THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR STAR ASSESSMENT. SO YOU CAN SEE AVERAGE SCORES IN THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS APPROACHING GRADE LEVEL ON THE RIGHT. YOU CAN SEE THE END OF YEAR ASSESSMENT. SO SHE SAW TREMENDOUS GROWTH. SHE GOT RECOGNIZED IN HER DISTRICT FOR REALLY HAVING EXCEPTIONAL GROWTH AMONG HER STUDENTS. SO WE ALSO LOOKED ACROSS ALL THE DATA WE COLLECTED WITH OUR PAST PARTNER, BECAUSE WE ARE VERY INTERESTED IN NOT JUST THE HEALTH BENEFITS, BUT THE ACADEMIC BENEFITS. WE HAVE LOTS OF CONCERNS THAT, WELL, IF YOU TAKE TIME AWAY FROM LEARNING, THIS COULD BE DETRIMENTAL TO THEIR LEARNING. BUT WHAT A LOT OF THE RESEARCH EVIDENCE SAYS IS THAT'S NOT NECESSARILY THE CASE. SO WE LOOKED AT OUR DATA AND THE STUDENTS WHO WERE IN CLASSROOMS WHERE TEACHERS PROVIDED 4 TO 10 MINUTES OF ACTIVITY, AND WE COMPARED THEIR TEST SCORES. AND WHAT WE SAW WAS CONSISTENT EVIDENCE SUGGESTING HIGHER TEST SCORES WITH STUDENTS WHO WERE IN TEACHERS WITH CLASSROOMS PROVIDING ACTIVITY COMPARED TO TEACHERS WHO DID NOT PROVIDE ACTIVITY. NOW, THIS DOES NOT MEAN THAT IF A TEACHER DOES THESE, THEY'RE GOING TO AUTOMATICALLY IMPROVE TEST SCORES. BUT IT CERTAINLY SUGGESTING IT'S NOT HURTING ACADEMICS IN ANY WAY. AND PART OF THE RESEARCH WE'RE DOING WITH FORT BEND IS TO COLLECT MORE DATA, TRY AND UNDERSTAND THIS BETTER. THIS STUDY WAS PRETTY SMALL IN SCOPE, SO WE DON'T WANT TO OVERINTERPRET THINGS AT THIS STAGE, BUT SO FAR THE RESULTS ARE PRETTY PROMISING. SO WE ALSO TALKED TO A LOT OF ELEMENTARY AGED STUDENTS. WE'RE PRIMARILY WORKING WITH ELEMENTARY STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS AT THIS STAGE, AND WE ALWAYS HEAR POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM THE STUDENTS. THEY REALLY LIKE THE APPROACHES. AND RIGHT NOW IN THE SPRING, WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF DOING SCHOOL NEEDS ASSESSMENTS. SO WE CONNECTED WITH FOUR SCHOOLS FOR THE STUDY. THAT'S WHAT WE'LL BE WORKING WITH. THEY'RE GOING TO BE AT THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL, AND WE'RE WORKING WITH THEM NOW TO BETTER UNDERSTAND WHAT SOME OF THEIR CHALLENGES ARE AND WHAT THEIR EXPERIENCES ARE LIKE TRYING TO PROMOTE THESE CLASSROOM BASED APPROACHES. LABOR TRAFFICKING IS SOMETHING THAT IMPACTS A LOT OF MEN. SO THAT'S WHY WE SEE THAT NUMBER KIND OF RAISED. I THINK ALSO THINK ABOUT MEDIA AND REPRESENTATION OF THIS ISSUE IN MEDIA. A LOT OF TIMES IT'S A YOUNG, WHITE, CONVENTIONALLY ATTRACTIVE WOMAN WHO'S BEING KIDNAPED. DO YOU THINK THAT'S WHAT WE ACTUALLY SEE? NO. ALSO, IT'S INTERESTING THAT WE KNOW THAT THE AVERAGE AGE WHEN SOMEONE IS FIRST EXPLOITED IS 14, BUT THEN WE SEE THAT ABOUT 75% OF THE WORLD'S HUMAN TRAFFICKING VICTIMS ARE ADULTS. SO HOW DOES THAT WORK? WHAT WE SEE IS THAT AVERAGE AGE IS WHEN THERE ARE MINOR, BUT IT'S NOT A LIFE THAT IS EASILY LEFT. SO PEOPLE WILL BE EXPLOITED UP UNTIL ADULTHOOD AND BEYOND, AND THEN THEY'RE IDENTIFIED. SO THEN THEY WOULD FALL INTO THAT KIND OF LATTER CATEGORY THERE. SO AGAIN, I WANT TO REITERATE, THIS IS NOT A FARAWAY ISSUE. THIS IS NOT SOMETHING THAT ONLY HAPPENS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES. HUMAN TRAFFICKING IS ALSO A TEXAS ISSUE. UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ESTIMATED THAT THERE ARE ABOUT 313,000 VICTIMS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING, JUST IN TEXAS ALONE, 79,000 OF WHICH ARE MINOR SEX TRAFFICKING VICTIMS, AND 234,000 OF WHICH ARE LABOR TRAFFICKING VICTIMS. SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR HOUSTON? WE ARE IN THE TOP TEN NUMBER OF TRAFFICKING CASES BY CITY. DOES ANYONE WANT TO GUESS WHAT NUMBER OUT OF THAT TEN. OR YOU CAN JUST GUESS WITH YOUR HAND FOUR TWO. AND OUR SUPER SENIORS, COULD YOU SEND UP REAL QUICK SO WE CAN GIVE YOU A WONDERFUL ROUND OF APPLAUSE, PLEASE? SEE IN WE HAVE. SO THEY'RE GOING TO GO SO MANY PLACES, SO MANY DIFFERENT SCHOOLS. WE'RE SUPER PROUD OF THEM. AND THEY MADE A REAL DIFFERENCE. THEIR GROUP, THEIR GROUP IS THEIR MULTIPLE STUDENT LEADERSHIP GROUPS, AND THEY'RE ALL WONDERFUL AND FANTASTIC. BUT I'M ESPECIALLY PROUD OF THEM BECAUSE THEY ARE VERY ACTIONABLE, ACTIONABLE. SO THEY PUT A THINK TANK TOGETHER, WHATEVER THEY'RE PUTTING AND PROMOTING, NOT ONLY THEY JUST DON'T PRESENT THAT, THEY PRESENT IT, THEY WIN MONEY AND THEN THEY PUT IT INTO ACTION. SO THEY'RE SUPER ACTIONABLE.
THEY WANT THEY JUST DON'T TALK ABOUT THE WELLNESS AND WANTING WELLNESS ON THEIR CAMPUS AND WANTING THINGS TO HAPPEN. THEY MAKE IT HAPPEN. SO I'M VERY PROUD OF YOU ALL. AND I LOVE THE STUDENT LEADERS THAT YOU BECOME, AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT YOU DO. MOVING ON. ALL
