OUR BODIES THRIVE ON RHYTHM AND ROUTINE, AND WE KIND OF ARE OUR BEST SELVES WHEN WE ARE IN A STATE OF CONSISTENCY. SO WE HAVE THIS 24 HOUR RHYTHM THAT REGULATES SLEEP AND WAKE, AND SO IT REGULATES WHEN WE'RE ALERT DURING THE DAY AND WHEN WE FEEL SLEEPY AT NIGHT. BUT IT ALSO DOES A LOT OF OTHER THINGS. SO WITHIN A FEW HOURS OF SUNSET, IT'S REACHING ITS PEAK FOR MOST OF US ADULTS. SO MAYBE AROUND MIDNIGHT OR SO. IT'S DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE, BUT IT'S USUALLY IN THE EARLY EARLY MORNING HOURS THAT IT'S PEAKING AND THEN IT DROPS OFF PRETTY DRASTICALLY IN THE EARLY MORNING HOURS SO THAT WE CAN START FEELING ALERT AND AWAKE RIGHT ABOUT THE TIME THAT WE'RE ALL GETTING UP AND HEADING TO WORK. IT REACHES ITS PEAK LATER IN THE NIGHT. SO RATHER THAN MIDNIGHT TO 3 A.M, IT'S REACHING ITS PEAK AROUND 3:06 A.M. AND IT'S NOT TURNING OFF UNTIL WELL INTO THE MORNING HOURS. SO WHY THIS IS A PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN WE ARE GOING TO SCHOOL AT THE CRACK OF DAWN, KIDS ARE ACTUALLY WELL WITHIN THEIR BIOLOGICAL NIGHT, MEANING THAT THEY'RE STARTING SCHOOL AT A TIME THAT THEIR BODY IS TELLING THEM LIKE STRONGLY THAT IT IS TIME TO BE ASLEEP. IT IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THEIR BIOLOGICAL NIGHT. WHEN YOU ADD TO THAT THE FACT THAT MELATONIN IS STARTING LATER AND THEY'RE BUILDING THAT SLEEP DRIVE MORE SLOWLY, THEY CAN'T FALL ASLEEP AT NIGHT. THEIR BODIES ARE NOT LETTING THEM FALL ASLEEP AT THE HOURS THAT THEY ONCE DID. AND SO THEY HAVE A LOT OF DIFFICULTY FALLING ASLEEP EARLY ENOUGH TO GET AN ADEQUATE NIGHT SLEEP. AND SO WE COMBINE THAT WITH EARLY MORNING WAKE UPS. WE GET DRAMATICALLY SLEEP DEPRIVED KID, 75%, AT LEAST OF TEENAGERS, GET LESS THAN THE RECOMMENDED 8 TO 10 HOURS OF SLEEP PER NIGHT. AND NO, ADOLESCENTS DO NOT NEED ANY LESS SLEEP THAN OLDER KIDS. WHAT THEY NEED IS THAT SHIFT IN THE SLEEP TIMING. SO WE HAVE SOME REALLY SLEEP DEPRIVED KIDS, AND I WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHY THAT'S A PROBLEM. I THINK WE ALL INTUITIVELY KNOW THAT IF WE ARE SLEEP DEPRIVED, WE DON'T FEEL GOOD. AND SO THE SIGNALS THAT OUR BODY IS SENDING OUT TO RESPOND WITH EMOTIONS ARE MUCH STRONGER. AND THEN WE DON'T HAVE THE ABILITY TO TURN DOWN AND HAVE CONTROL OVER THOSE EMOTIONS. SO WHAT THAT MEANS IS THAT WE GET SWINGS IN EMOTIONS DURING THE DAY. WE GET VERY INTENSE EMOTIONS THAT WE CAN'T KIND OF TURN DOWN. AND THIS LEADS TO INCREASED VULNERABILITY FOR THINGS LIKE ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, ALL THOSE THINGS THAT HAVE REALLY NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES FOR EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING FOR MANY YEARS TO COME. SO IN ADDITION TO MENTAL HEALTH, IT ALSO IMPACTS PHYSICAL HEALTH AS WELL. BECAUSE IF YOU ARE SLEEP DEPRIVED, YOUR BODY KIND OF JUST DOESN'T KNOW HOW TO METABOLIZE FOOD, AND YOU'RE ALSO MORE LIKELY TO BE EATING AT TIMES THAT YOUR BODY THINKS IS IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT AND IS THINKING, THIS IS NOT THE BEST TIME TO BE METABOLIZING FOOD. SOME OF THAT IS BECAUSE AS WE IN AS WE APPROACH BUDGETING FOR A SCHOOL DISTRICT IN VERY UNCERTAIN TIMES ABOUT HOW SCHOOL FUNDING WILL LOOK GOING FORWARD, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO MAKE CHANGE BECAUSE YOU CAN'T PLAN, YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOUR REVENUE IS GOING TO BE AND WHAT THAT MEANS IN A SCHOOL DISTRICT LIKE FORT BEND ISD, WHERE WE HAVE 85 TO ALMOST 90% OF THE BUDGET, IS SALARY AND BENEFITS FOR THE EMPLOYEES THAT WE'RE TALKING ABOUT. THE MOST OF THAT IS THE TEACHER SALARIES AND BENEFITS. AND I'LL JUST ADD AN EDITORIAL HERE THAT IT'S LESS THAN 1%. IS ANY CENTRAL [01:10:04] ADMINISTRATOR, ANY PEOPLE THAT WORK IN IN THIS BUILDING? IT'S NOT WE DON'T PAY A WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY GOING INTO THAT. IT'S A IT'S A STAFF AT THE CAMPUSES BECAUSE OF THAT FINANCIAL PRESSURE.
